HEALTH BENEFITS OF BASIL _Great home Remedies

HEALTH BENEFITS OF BASIL 19-9-2011 Basil is a popular herb in Italian cooking, particularly in pesto. This fragrant and flavorful herb, a relative of peppermint, is an excellent, nutritious addition to your pasta sauce, soup, or salad. An array of flavonoids exist in basil, which help to protect cells and chromosomes from damage. Studies have shown that two of these flavonoids in particular, orientin and vicenin, are useful in protecting cell structures and chromosomes from damage by radiation and oxygen. Essential oil of basil has been shown to inhibit the growth of several types of bacteria, many of which have become resistant to antibiotics. This essential oil has been found to inhibit growth of the widespread staphylococcus, enterococcus, pseudomonas, and e. coli bacteria, among others. Adding basil to your vinaigrette will both enhance the flavor, and ensure that the fresh salad greens are safe to eat. Eugenol, which is found in essential oil of basil, provides an anti-inflammatory effect, by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase. Aspirin and Ibuprofen work by blocking this same enzyme. So, basil can have healing benefits, and provide relief from the symptoms of inflammatory problems, like rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel conditions. Basil is also a good source of vitamin A, which helps to prevent damage to the cells by free radicals. Vitamin A also prevents free radicals from oxidizing cholesterol in the blood stream, preventing the cholesterol from building up in the blood vessels. Magnesium is also present in basil. This essential mineral helps the heart and blood vessels to relax, improving blood flow. Other nutrients found in basil include iron, calcium, potassium, and vitamin C. The fresh, spicy flavor and scent of basil will wake up any boring salad or soup. Use fresh basil whole, or shredded to add a burst of flavor to your dinner. If you are using fresh basil in a cooked dish, add it towards the end of cooking, so that the volatile oils will not be dissipated by the heat. Insalata Caprese is a simple salad, utilizing tomatoes, fresh mozzerella cheese, basil, and olive oil. 1/2 pound, fresh mozzerella, sliced 1/4 inch thick. 2 large tomatoes, sliced 1/4 inch thick. 1 cup fresh basil leaves. salt and pepper 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil. Even today, this small annual herb is dedicated to the Hindu diety Vishnu and is said to be the incarnation of his wife, Lakshmi. In India, basil is seen as a symbol of both fortune and beauty. Sweet basil essential oil is steam-distiled from the leaves and flowers of Ocimum basilicum. A good basil will have a a sweet, grassy scent with hints of spice. Traditional Herbal Uses At one time, basil was considered an aphrodisiac but today basil is used mainly to stabilize mood and aid digestion. Herbalists believe that basil has both carminative and antispasmodic properties. And a 1997 study found basil to have strong antibacterial properties as well. In Chinese medicine, basil is classified as a warming oil which strengthens yang and eases depression, exhaustion and moodiness. It's recommended as a remedy for melancholy, complacency and indecisiveness. Aromatherapy Uses Herbalist John Gerard wrote of basil, "it maketh a man merry and glad," and modern day aromatherapists still use basil for mood. Basil is considered to be uplifting, stimulating and awakening. It's diffused into the air to clear the mind, increase concentration and focus attention. Aromatherapists also use basil to ease the feelings of fear and vulnerabilty that often accompany life-changing events like a move, a divorce or a job change. Basil is said to give courage and increase one's ability to make decisions decisively and objectively. Blending With Other Essential Oils Basil blends especially well with citrus oils like orange, lemon and lime. It can also blend well with heavy oils like Jasmine and Ylang Ylang or with woody oils like pine and cedar. Basil is considered a top-note. Safety & Warnings Basil is generally considered safe for most people but it's use is contra-indicated during pregnancy. Basil oils with high levels of methyl cinnamate or methyl chavicol can be skin irritants. Lisa Barger is a traditional naturopath specializing in natural health education. HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR VISION WITHOUT SURGERY - SIMPLE EYE EXERCISES WORK WONDERS

HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR VISION WITHOUT SURGERY - SIMPLE EYE EXERCISES WORK WONDERS 19-9-2011 We all know how important it is to keep our bodies fit. Going to the gym, jogging, and swimming are all on the "good for you" list of activities. But did you know that you can exercise your eyes as well? Exercising your eyes keeps them healthy, takes away eyestrain, helps you to focus and even improves your vision without surgery. Exercise 1. Massage First close your eyes tightly for 3-5 seconds, then open them for 3-5 seconds. Repeat this 7 or 8 times. Then close your eyes and massage with circular movements of your fingers for 1-2 minutes. Make sure you press very lightly; otherwise you could hurt your eyes. Press three fingers of each hand against your upper eyelids, hold for 1-2 seconds, then release. Repeat 5 times. Exercise 2. Movement Sit and relax. Roll your eyes clockwise, then anticlockwise. Repeat 5 times, and blink in between each. Exercise 3. Mark on the glass Sit about 50 cm from the window. Make a mark on the glass at your eye level (a small sticker, black or red, would be perfect). Look through this mark and focus on something far away for 10-15 seconds; then focus on the mark again. Exercise 5. Follow a pencil Hold a pencil in front of you on a length of an arm. Move your arm slowly to your nose, follow the pencil with your eyes until you can keep it in focus. Repeat 10 times. Exercise 6. Writing on the wall Look in front of you at the opposite wall and pretend that you are writing with your eyes, without turning your head. It seems difficult at the starts, but with a bit of practice it is really fun. The bigger the letters, the better the effect. Exercise 7. Watch the time with your eyes Imagine that you are standing in front of a really big clock. Look at the middle of the clock. Then look at any hour mark, without turning your head. Look back at the center. Then look at another hour mark. Do this at least 12 times. You can also do this exercise with your eyes closed. When doing the exercises, make sure that you're not facing anybody, or else that they know you're doing eye exercises. Otherwise they might think you have gone nuts. If you can spare 10-15 minutes a day to do these exercises, it would be very beneficial for the health of your eyes. But it is even more important to do the exercises regularly, than it is to do them for a long time. Even 30-60 seconds of eye movement every hour is very helpful. For example, when your computer takes its sweet time to do something, most people just swear at the poor thing and waste the time, but you can make a few circles with your eyes. Even the first day you do this, you should notice that, when you finished working, your eyes aren't as tired as usual. You can find other simple tips for your eye health at http://www.1-contact-lenses-consumer-guide.com/eye-health.htm Tanya Turner is a contact lens expert and a founder of www.1-contact-lenses-consumer-guide.com/, where you can find unbiased information about eye health and all types of discount contact lenses HOME REMEDIES FOR RESTORING YOUR EYESIGHT Prepare two small linen bags and put 1 table spoon of dill seeds in each bag. Tie them up and put each bag in a cup with boiling water for 2 minutes. Let the bags cool a little bit and apply them on your eyes as compresses (the temperature should be comfortable for you). Cover the bags with a plastic wrap/bag and then with a rolled towel. Leave it for 15 minutes. Do it every night before you go to bed. If for some reason you do it during the day, stay in a bed for another 20 minutes after removing the bags from your eyes (still keep your eyes covered with a towel). Repeat treatment every day. Your eyesight will start restoring after the 20th procedure. The treatment is for 30-45 days.

LEARN HOW OVERDOSING PAINKILLERS CAN PERMANENTLY HARM YOUR HEALTH AND CAUSE DAILY REBOUND HEADACHES

LEARN HOW OVERDOSING PAINKILLERS CAN PERMANENTLY HARM YOUR HEALTH AND CAUSE DAILY REBOUND HEADACHES 19-9-2011 Say you had a stressful day at work, didn't get enough sleep the night before and as a result you've got a bad headache. What do you do? It's easy! You take good old Tylenol or other over-the-counter medicine. And it helps! No more headache, the world is bright again. The next day you wake up with the headache again. This time your headache is tolerable but dull and constant. It's a good thing you bought that medicine yesterday. Better take it before headache gets more painful. If you take two pills instead of one it might even work faster. Sounds like a logical thing to do, right? Wrong. All you did is blocked pain receptors that are involved in transmitting signals between brain cells. That means the headache is still there, your brain just stopped getting signals about it. Instead of treating the cause you are treating the symptoms. In addition wildly known over-the-counter medicine like Tylenol and Advil can be really harmful if misused. I was shocked to find out that only 16% of people read the label completely. Forty four percent of people (and that's hundreds of millions) read the label and knowingly exceed the recommended dose. Are you one of those people? If you experience headache more than two times a day, you've got a problem. Popping painkillers like M&M's may only lead to rebound headaches. When you take the same medicine for the long period of time your body becomes addicted to it. What happens when medicine wears off? You get an even stronger headache, which forces you to take more medicine...and more medicine...and more medicine...It's a vicious circle. I'm not trying to tell you never to use painkillers again. They can be really helpful sometimes, but they should not become a part of your daily ration. One more thing. ALWAYS read a label and pay close attention. Some over-the counter medicine even if prescribed for different things can contain the same active ingredients simultaneously. In that case you will exceed maximum daily dose and do your body more harm than good. For example, Tylenol used for reducing headaches contains acetaminophen. So does Maximum Strength TheraFlu, used for fighting cold. If you combine those two medicines, you will most likely overdose acetaminophen. Combined with bad diet, irregular eating and drinking alcohol it will gradually destroy your liver. The worst thing is that signs of liver failure on the early stage are very similar to the common flu. Not knowing that most people increase doses of flu medicine, killing their liver completely. And it all starts with something as little as a tension headache and weakened immune system. So if you are suffering already from rebound headaches the only thing you can do is to stop taking any painkillers at all. Replace them with natural remedies. Do you know that natural solutions often work faster and are more effective than painkillers? There are so many ways to choose from! Hydrotherapy, aromatherapy, acupressure, massage, yoga and so on. Most of these methods people have been using for centuries. If they worked for millions of people before, they are guaranteed to work for you. Treat your headache before it even starts and you will save tons of money on the painkillers. HEADACHE PAIN REMEDIES - CHINESE STYLE Traditional Chinese Medicine contains a wealth of headache pain relief information and headache pain remedies, treatments and techniques. Some treatments like herbal therapy and acupuncture require a trained professional to administer them. However, there are many headache relief techniques such as acupressure, massage and breathing exercises that can easily be applied by anyone. All you need is a few minutes to learn them and a quiet place to do them. The first of the natural headache relief techniques offered below is acupressure. This involves pressing and rubbing specific points on your head, hands and feet that have been proven over many centuries in China to relieve and prevent various kinds of headache. Acupressure is simple to do on yourself and others and may be the only headache pain remedy you ever need. The second of these natural headache pain remedies is breathing exercises. Breathing exercises offer a multitude of benefits - stress relief, relaxation, enhanced blood circulation, pain relief, toning of your nervous system, greater energy, improved sleep and much more. Like acupressure, breathing exercises are easy to do and also may be the only headache pain remedy you need. Both acupressure and breathing exercises are safe, natural headache relief techniques that can be used in conjunction with other headache treatments or medications. If you have any concerns though, check with your health professional first. It is also recommended that you combine the techniques, regardless of whether you suffer from the occasional tension headache or chronic headaches or migraines. Prevention is a key factor - don't wait till you get another head-splitting migraine to begin using these techniques. Apply them when you DON'T have a headache or when you feel one coming on and maybe you can prevent it developing. Headache Pain Remedies - Acupressure How 1. Once you locate a point with your fingers or thumbs, press it until you feel no more than a comfortable pain. Hold the pressure while you rub the point for 1-2 minutes in very small circular movements, then gently release the pressure. Do this 2-3 times a day as a preventative and whenever you have a headache or feel one developing. 2. If a point is very sensitive, this indicates an underlying imbalance or problem and pressing it is a good thing. Simply release the pressure slightly and in time it will become less painful. 3. Acupressure points adapt to stimulation so as a general guide don't press the same point for more than 7 consecutive days. After seven days, stop for 3-4 days then continue. Point 1 (called Fengchi in Chinese) Two points actually - each one located in a depression at the back of your head, at the base of your skull, and just to the side of your neck muscles. Place your fingers of both hands on top of your head and use your thumbs to find then press both points, either one at a time or simultaneously. Point 2 (Jianjing ) Located in the muscle on top of both shoulders, half-way between your neck vertebrae and the outside tip of your shoulder. Use the index and middle fingers of your right hand to press and rub the point on top of your left shoulder. Then, do the right shoulder point with your left index and middle fingers. Point 3 (Hegu) Located on the back of both hands, about 3-4cm (1.5 inches) in from the edge of the webbing between your index fingers and thumbs. Use a pinching technique by placing your right thumb on the left hand point, and your right index finger on the palm side of the webbing. Then swap the procedure to do your right hand point. Point 4 (Taichong) Located on top of both feet, about 3-4cm (1.5 inches) in from the edge of the webbing between your big and second toes. Sit down, then bend forward and use your thumbs or index fingers to press then rub the points. An alternative position is sitting with one foot resting on the opposite knee. Headache Pain Remedies - Breathing Exercises Controlled breathing techniques can also relieve and prevent many kinds of headache. Follow the below link to two excellent photo-illustrated breathing exercises, both of which have a multitude of benefits for headache sufferers. Note that when combining the above headache pain remedies (acupressure and breathing techniques) in a single session, it is recommended that you do the acupressure first. Finally, if you have any questions about either of these headache relief techniques or would like more headache pain relief information, contact the author via his website. Matthew Scott is a professionally trained Chinese medicine practitioner from Australia, now living in China. His website offers a Stop Headache Program on downloadable video. HOME REMEDIES FOR HEADACHES Instead of regular tea, drink strawberry extract: boil a few strawberries in a glass of water for 5 minutes, let it sit and drink without limitation. Soak your feet in very hot water for 10-15 minutes, then drink hot peppermint tea or strong coffee (if you can have it) or eat a piece of salty herring. Rub your temples with a piece of lemon skin. Before you go to bed, put 1 tea spoon of sugar in your mouth and then drink a glass of water.

FEED YOUR SKIN RIGHT AND GET THE RESULTS YOU ALWAYS WANTED

FEED YOUR SKIN RIGHT AND GET THE RESULTS YOU ALWAYS WANTED 19-9-2011 Your skin needs the same nourishment that all other organs of your body do, like protein, minerals, carbohydrates, vitamins and micro elements. Ideally you should get some protein, carbohydrates and fat with every meal. Be careful when you are following a diet that focused only on one kind of nourishment. Protein is important for creating new cells and starts biochemical processes in your body. You can get protein from meat, milk and soy beans. Carbohydrates are a source of energy for your cells. Do not get 'empty' calories from sugar, pasta, rice, potatoes, white bread or sweets. These foods will increase insulin level in your blood that will likely cause acne. Instead eat whole grains, brown rice and ziti. Fat provides energy to your skin and helps to assimilate some vitamins, like vitamin A. Your body also needs fat to create new cells. There is especially valuable fat in cold pressed vegetable oils. You will have dry and rough skin, if you do not get enough vitamin A. It is so important for your skin because it helps to form new cells in the epidermis. And beta-carotene helps your skin to endure the ultraviolet rays of the sun. Even if you are following a diet, eat avocados, nuts and add olive oil to your salads. Vitamin C takes part in the synthesis of collagen in your skin and fights free radicals that speed up your aging. Smokers need to get at least 40% more of vitamin C that non smokers. Vitamin E helps to neutralize free radicals and is good for your skin even if you use it topically. Vegetable oils, egg yolk, soy products and whole grains are rich in this vitamin. If you want to have youthful skin and healthy shiny hair, you need a very important vitamin F. You can get it from cold pressed vegetable oils. Sodium and potassium are responsible for skin resiliency. You will have dry skin and weak nails, if you do not get enough iron. Selenium neutralizes free radicals; especially if you take it together with vitamin E. Phosphorus is important for providing energy to your skin cells. Zinc is important for protein metabolism. Magnesium supports cell permeability. Copper helps with the formation of collagen in your skin. If you have wrinkles or acne, you should get essential fatty acids Omega-3 and Omega-6. These fatty acids will decrease inflammatory processes that can lead to acne and premature aging. To get these valuable acids eat salmon, tuna, mackerel, almonds, filbert and flax seeds. If your face gets red often and regularly, exclude spices, red wine and smoked meat. These foods enlarge blood capillaries. HOME AND BEAUTY REMEDIES Deep cleansing mask: Whip 1 raw egg yolk with 1 tea spoon of lemon juice. Apply a layer of the mask on your face, let it dry a little bit, then apply the next layers until you use all of the mask. When the last layer gets dry, wash the mask off with warm water and follow with your moisturizer. You will have fresh healthy looking skin, if you drink peppermint tea regularly. It will also help you stay calm. To get rid of acne use a mask made of a grated apple mixed with 1 tea spoon of honey. A nourishing mask with beer: Mix 2 oz of light beer with 1 table spoon of oatmeal, 1 raw egg yolk and 2 drops of sage oil. Apply it on your face and neck for 15-20 min. Rinse the mask with warm water, then use cold water. Great Home Remedy: If you feel tired all the time, try this very safe, natural and tasty recipe: Take 1/2 pound of dried apricots, 1/2 pound of dried figs, 1/2 pound of dried plums and 25 walnuts, cut everything into small pieces, mix them and keep the mix in your refrigerator in a closed glass jar. Take 1 full table spoon every day (1 full tea spoon for a child). This recipe helps even those people who just had a surgery and are very weak. Another benefit is that it helps with and prevents constipation.

DEPRESSION TEST_GREAT HOME REMEDIES

DEPRESSION TEST 19-9-2011 Many people who are suffering from depression may not even be aware of it. The chances are that if you have been feeling sad or unhappy for more than just a couple of weeks and have lost interest in most of the activities you used to enjoy to the extent that your daily routines are now being affected, then you could be suffering from some form of depression. There are many symptoms associated with depression and not everyone will experience the same ones nor with the same degree of intensity. Consequently, diagnosing and treating depression can be problematic as it is important to rule out other possible causes of the symptoms such as an underlying medical condition, substance abuse, or normal responses to say, bereavement, that of course will result in feelings of sadness and despondency but which are not considered true depression. One way of finding out if you could be suffering from depression is to take a depression test. Depression tests are often used by health professionals in the first instance to assess whether depression is indicated, and if so, how severe the depression might be. There are many tests available but one of the most popular is the Goldberg test. The Goldberg Test This test was designed by Dr Ivan Goldberg and consists of 18 questions, each of which are answered by the individual using a sliding scale of responses based on how they have felt during the previous week. Once all the questions are answered, the scores (in brackets) are added up to give a final score and an indication of whether depression is likely. This test can also be useful to check periodically to see if the symptoms of depression are improving or getting worse as any change of 5 points or more in either direction is considered to be significant. Sliding scale of responses Not at all (0) A little (1) Somewhat(2) Moderately(3) Quite a lot(4) Very much(5) Questions 1 I do things slowly 2 My future appears hopeless 3 It is hard for me to concentrate on reading 4 The pleasure and fun has gone out of my life 5 I find it hard to make decisions 6 I have lost interest in things that used to be important to me 7 I feel unhappy, depressed and sad 8 I feel agitated and unable to relax 9 I feel tired 10 It takes a lot of effort for me to do simple things 11 I feel guilty and I deserve to be punished 12 I feel like a failure 13 I feel numb and lifeless, more dead than alive 14 My sleep is disturbed; I'm sleeping too much or too little 15 I spend time thinking HOW I can commit suicide 16 I feel trapped or confined 17 I feel depressed even when good things happen to me 18 I have lost weight or put it on without being on a diet Scoring If your score was less than 9 then depression is not indicated. Between 10 and 17 - possibly some minor depression Between 18 and 21 - maybe on the verge of depression Between 22 and 35 - minor to moderate depression indicated Between 36 and 53 - moderate to severe depression possible Over 54 - possibly suffering from severe depression The Beck Depression Inventory Test Another popular test is the Beck Depression Inventory test often used by mental health professionals. This test is based on 21 self-reported questions that correspond closely to the symptoms of depression as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders 4th Edition. Each response is based on how the individual has felt over the previous two weeks. All of the responses to the questions are identified by a score of 0, 1, 2 or 3, which are then added together at the end to give a final score. The answers to the questions are intended to give an indication of how a person views how they are functioning psychologically and physically, and how they appear to be coping on a daily basis. For example, responses will give an idea of: How sad you are feeling How you view the future If you feel like a failure Your level of satisfaction from activities If you feel guilty If you feel deserving of punishment How disappointed you are in yourself If you often blame yourself Whether you have thoughts of suicide How often you cry If you feel irritated and annoyed a lot of the time How much interest you have in other people and social situations Your ability to make decisions How you view yourself and your appearance Your ability to carry out your work Your sleeping patterns Your energy levels Your appetite Any weight fluctuations If you are fearful or worry about physical symptoms and health If you have lost interest in sex Conclusion It's important to remember that no test, no matter how good it is, can give you a reliable diagnosis. If you think you or someone close to you are experiencing symptoms of depression then you should seek professional advice either from a GP or other health professional for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate help. Your GP will be able to discuss symptoms with you in much more detail and will be able to identify other factors that might be influencing how you are feeling. Once an accurate diagnosis is made then treatment options can be discussed that will help get you back to how you used to be. Hospitals and clinics cost a lot of money. Hospitalization can be stressful financially as well as physically. Many people these days are turning to options that are more accessible and inexpensive. One of the most popular of the options is the home remedy. Home remedies are cures and treatments that are made from the things you probably already have in your house. Home remedies may or may not actually have medicinal properties that treat the ailments in question. Many of the more popular home remedies are used out of tradition. They may not always cure the disease - sometimes they simply make you feel better. Remedies made at home are less expensive than other forms of medicine. They are relatively harmless compared to modern medicine, as they rarely cause harmful interactions or side effects. These natural cures have been used for generations to cure our common ailments. Many people confuse home remedies with homeopathic medicine. Aside from the fact that both are considered alternative forms of medicine, they are not related. Many homeopathic treatments work for no other reason than the placebo effect. They are nothing like natural remedies. One of the most commonly used home remedy is chicken soup. Who hasn't enjoyed a nice hot bowl of chicken soup when they've had a cold or the flu? According to recent studies, chicken soup may be effective in treating these upper respiratory ailments because it contains neutrophil chemotaxis. These include but are not limited to: yeast infection, acne, constipation, dandruff, abdominal pain, tooth ache, and headache. The home remedy for a yeast infection, for example, combats the fungus (yeast) that is responsible for the infection. One treatment is to wash the infected area with apple cider vinegar. Yogurt can also be used in this manner, as it contains bacteria effective in fighting yeast. Drinking buttermilk is another popular way to cure a yeast infection. Acne is a common complaint among teenagers, but affects adults as well. Home remedies can help to dry the acne up. One effective home remedy is to puree orange peel with a little bit of water and apply it to the acne. Cucumber leaves can also be used in the same manner. Even a raw clove of garlic rubbed across the acne can be effective. Of the home remedies available for dandruff, the most popular is aloe vera gel. Aloe vera is good for your hair, too - not just the scalp. Lime juice is also effective against dandruff. Constipation is a very common complaint, and it has many home remedies. Most of these employ foods with laxative properties. Everyone is familiar with the laxative effects of prunes, but were you aware that bale fruit is also helpful? Bale fruit cleans out the intestines and gets the contents of your intestines moving, providing constipation relief. For children and toddlers, an effective treatment for constipation is bran cereal. Eating guava is also an effective treatment. Home remedies are made from natural ingredients, so they are generally safe and usually won't harm you.
